Thomas William Selleck, an American actor and film producer, was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 29th, 1945. Tom’s family moved to Sherman Oaks, California, around halfway through his boyhood. Tom grew up with three brothers and sisters and graduated from high school in 1962. He lived with his parents while attending Los Angeles Valley College before winning a basketball scholarship to the University of Southern California.
He majored in Business Administration while there but changed his mind after an instructor urged him to attempt acting. Selleck had dropped out of high school to pursue a career in acting by his senior year. During this time, Selleck was also recruited into the United States military to fight in the Vietnam War. As a result, from 1967 to 1973, Selleck served in the California National Guard.
Magnum, P.I. (1980–1988) starred as private investigator Thomas Magnum in the television series Magnum. Selleck has co-starred in the sitcom Blue Bloods as New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan since 2010, and the program has been renewed for a twelfth season in 2021–2022. Since 2005, he has played Jesse Stone, a troubled small-town police chief, in nine made-for-TV movies based on Robert B. Parker’s books.
In the films Three Men and a Baby (1987) and Three Men and a Little Lady (1988), Selleck plays bachelor architect Peter Mitchell (1990). Since Magnum, P.I., he has appeared in over 50 additional films and television shows, including Quigley Down Under, Mr. Baseball, and Lassiter. On Friends, he played Monica Geller’s love interest, Dr. Richard Burke, on The Rockford Files, he played Lance White, the amiable and naive partner, and on Las Vegas, he played casino magnate A.J. Tom Selleck paid a little over $5 million for a property near Ventura, California, in 1988. Selleck has said that he works on the ranch to “keep himself sane,” although the property has more than its fair share of opulent features. Selleck purchased a condo in Los Angeles before purchasing his property. He collaborated with James Blakely III to transform a 1,800-square-foot condo into a rustic living area that resembles an Edwardian country mansion – except it’s a condo.

The professional life of Tom Selleck:
Tom Selleck is a mustachioed veteran actor best remembered for his role as hot Hawaii investigator Thomas Magnum on the television drama Magnum, P.I. Magnum was brawny, rascally, and devilishly attractive, zipping about Oahu in a Hawaiian shirt and a Ferrari, solving murders and impressing the girls. His first film job was in a supporting role in Myra Breckenridge (1970), after which he featured in T.V. commercials and tiny T.V. and movie appearances until Magnum in 1980. Since then, he’s been a regular low-key presence on television, most notably with colorful recurring appearances on Friends (as Monica’s older lover, Dr. Richard Burke, 1996-2000) and Las Vegas (2006-08). In a series of T.V. movies, he also played Jesse Stone, Robert Parker’s small-town cop (beginning in 2005). In 2010, Selleck joined the series Blue Bloods as another officer, NYPD Officer Frank Reagan. Tom Selleck had a big hit in 1987 with Three Men and a Baby, but Hollywood has never quite figured out what to do with his handsome-but-never-too-serious demeanor. Coma (1978), Lassiter (1984, with Selleck as a jewel thief), Quigley Down Under (1990, with Selleck as a cowboy sniper), Mr. Baseball (1992, with Selleck as an aged baseball player in Japan), and In & Out (1993) are some of his other films (1997, with Selleck as an openly gay T.V. reporter).
