It seems that with the growing environmental awareness and concern about global warming and climate change, there is a growing concern over global drought. With less precipitation, we are seeing water usage and drought go up. Now, as in other parts of the world, we are also seeing increased population growth. This means more people will need water.
How can this change caused by drought affect us? What are the implications? How does this changing world of ours affect us? There are many concerns here.
When there is less water available for us to use or take advantage of, what happens? What do we do? Will we have enough to support our needs or will we be in an endless struggle to have enough to live? It has been said that in areas where there are extreme weather changes, food may become scarcer and more expensive. This can lead to malnutrition.
This then leads to poverty. More poor people in developing countries are forced to bring their families in order to have some kind of a living. This coupled with a lack of education and other infrastructure means that the lives of many more people are put under pressure. Extreme weather conditions cause droughts that in turn can lead to water scarcity. As more people suffer, conflict can break out and water can become even more contested.
So what can we do? The solutions to these problems are not obvious, but it is good to look into how we can do our part to prevent global warming. One obvious step is to plant more trees. We have the technology and the resources now to ensure that this occurs.
Another solution is to re-use water that is used for various purposes around the home. These include drinking and cooking. A lot of plastic water bottles are being thrown away every day and this is having an adverse effect on the environment. Reusing them can cut down on the amount of plastic that ends up in our landfills, helping to slow down the climate change that has been caused by human activities.
A final and very simple step is to switch to energy sources that are more environmentally friendly. There are a number of ways to save electricity at home. Solar panels can be placed on the roof or other areas of the house to harness the power of the sun.
Global warming does not have to be the end of the world. With awareness and cooperation from all parties to the problem, it can be prevented and hopefully reversed. It has already affected many parts of the globe and what effects it will have in the future varies. What we can do now is focus on doing what we can to reduce its negative effects on our planet. Following the simple steps outlined in this article can make a positive difference in the long run.
Every year, there is an international environmental accord that is created to stop the harmful effects of global warming. The Kyoto Protocol Limiting greenhouse gases is an example of this. Each country is responsible for its emissions so as to comply with the Kyoto Protocol. The aim is to keep the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere below the level that is considered safe.
Drought is another example of global warming. When there is too much rainfall, it can have devastating effects on agriculture. This in turn will have an effect on food prices and cause a decline in the production of the crops. In most cases, droughts have been known to cause massive damage to the agricultural industry. Although some areas are becoming more drought-prone, there is still hope that rain can be delivered to these areas. By using new technologies, farmers can better manage their fields and avoid too much rain.
Extreme weather events can also be tied to global warming. One of the biggest is currently Hurricane Sandy. This natural disaster is wreaking havoc across the eastern seaboard of the United States. Sandy is one of the strongest hurricanes to hit the United States in over 100 years. Hurricane Katrina also had some degree of global warming potential. These types of extreme weather events should act as a lesson to all mankind that Mother Nature still has a lot of power and she will not be left in control of the Earth.
It is hopeful to see that more people are waking up to the alarming amounts of global warming. The next time you sit down to eat, ask yourself what has been going on during the last century. Then tell yourself that you did not know that the Earth was heating up like it is today. Educate yourself and fight the fight against global warming before it is too late. Educate yourself now while there is still time!
