Evaluate Your Lawn
When you first realize that if you don’t try to stop it, you’re going to end up with a dead lawn, try to figure out what’s going wrong. Can the grass be dormant? Look at the crowns. This is the whitish part from where the grass blades grow.
If they look healthy, the grass is probably dormant. If they’re dried out or discolored, it might spell trouble. You may have dead grass on your hands.
Time to Create a Healthy Environment
First, eliminate weeds and old grass. Spray all of the affected areas of the lawn with a nonselective herbicide. Give it two hours to dry. Keep kids and pets out of the area during that time.
Do this on a warm, sunny day and wait one week for the herbicide to do its job. Remove all decomposing plant material to ensure the movement of air, nutrients, and water.
Aerate and Fertilize
Poking holes in the lawn give the roots access to oxygen and help to revive brown grass. Test the soil for phosphorus which aids in the development of healthy roots. If phosphorus is lacking, spread it across the lawn.
You can also add a grass-starter fertilizer to help encourage new grass growth.
Seed The Lawn or Fill in With Sod
If you have large areas that you need to fill, you can use full pieces of sod. Plugs or sprigs can fill in smaller sections or you can seed any of the areas that need new growth.
The key to using seed is to spread it evenly making sure that there’s proper contact with the soil. A thin layer of soil should be spread over the seed.
Follow-Up Care
Give the sod or seed plenty of water without overwatering. You may need to water a few times a day in the beginning. Keep it moist but not too wet.
