The NBA has designated two of its most infamous referees to oversee Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals between the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics on Monday night. The scheduled tip-off time for the game in Boston is 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Leading the officiating crew will be Scott Foster, who will serve as the crew chief, alongside Tony Brothers. They will joined by referee John Goble to complete the crew.
Foster and Brothers are undeniably the two most well-known referees in the NBA, although this distinction does not necessarily carry a positive connotation. In a comprehensive survey conducted by Sam Amick and Josh Robbins of The Athletic, players across the league voted Foster as the worst referee, with over 25% of the votes. Brothers, on the other hand, received a diverse range of votes, being simultaneously hailed as the best referee while also being tied for second-worst.
Interestingly, when Scott Foster officiated games during the 2022-23 regular season, home teams emerged victorious in a staggering 70.7% of those matchups. This percentage represents the highest success rate throughout Foster’s 28-year tenure as an NBA referee. On average, home teams outscored their opponents by a margin of 118.6 to 113.2 in the 58 games officiated by Foster this season. It’s worth noting that Foster’s most recent officiating assignment was Game 4 of the series, which resulted in a Celtics triumph in Miami.
During the regular season, home teams won 64.1% of the games officiated by Brothers, while Goble’s mark stood at 56.5% for the games he worked. The officiating style employed in games always garners attention from fans, and thus, Foster and Brothers are certain to be on the minds of many spectators.
