The much-anticipated moment has arrived as Kiana Ledé unveils her highly awaited second album, Grudges, under The Heavy Group/Republic Records. This sophomore endeavor comes three years after the introduction of her debut album, KIKI (Deluxe), and features an impressive collection of 17 tracks.
Grudges showcases an array of notable collaborations, including appearances by Bryson Tiller, Khalid, and Ella Mai. The captivating union of Ledé and Mai is evident on the second single, “Jealous,” a song that Ledé specifically chose to bring together two powerful R&B artists. Ledé spoke fondly of her admiration for Kehlani and Ari Lennox and her desire to unite R&B talents. “Jealous” holds a special significance, released on Ledé’s birthday, and serves as a testament to the artistic connection she shares with Mai.
The title track, “Grudges,” captivates listeners with its raw emotions, skillfully weaving together Ledé’s dynamic vocals and a stellar lineup of guests, such as Kyle Dion, Sinéad Harnett, Destin Conrad, and Joyce Wrice. This powerful composition serves as a poignant platform for self-reflection and introspection, allowing listeners to delve deep into their own thoughts and emotions.
Additionally, “Grudges” sets the tone for the rest of the album, establishing a foundation of raw authenticity and vulnerability that resonates throughout the musical journey. With each heartfelt lyric and soulful melody, the track draws listeners closer to the core essence of Kiana Ledé’s artistic vision.
In the impassioned track “Damage,” Ledé boldly dismisses an unappreciative lover, emphasizing the pain inflicted upon her and making it abundantly clear that reconciliation is not on her agenda.
The introspective tone continues in “Same Type,” where Ledé’s hauntingly beautiful voice overlays a melancholic piano melody, delving into the struggles of differentiating between a virtuous man and one of ill-intent.
Grudges also features two additional singles, “Irresponsible” and “Deeper.” The former, released as the lead single in September 2022, was accompanied by a visually stunning music video directed by Michelle Parker. The latter, “Deeper,” an intimate and heartfelt composition, preceded the official announcement of Grudges. Notably, Nija Charles, recognized as one of the top five nominees for Songwriter of the Year in the Non-Classical category at the 65th Grammy Awards, contributed her songwriting and production talents to this remarkable piece.
During a spring interview with Rated R&B, Ledé revealed the inspiration behind Grudges, sharing that her recent years have been marked by personal trials and tribulations. Despite the drama and trauma she has experienced, Ledé approaches her music with a newfound maturity and balance. She finds solace in the creative realm, using it as a therapeutic outlet to convey the depth of her experiences and emotions.
Kiana Ledé’s Grudges is a profound artistic offering that showcases her growth, resilience, and ability to captivate listeners with her evocative storytelling and soul-stirring vocals.
