In the 2023 Women’s World Cup semifinal match versus Australia, Ella Toone gave England the lead in stunning fashion.
England, the defending World Cup champion and European champion, are among the favourites going into the competition.
After winning all three of their games in the group stage, Sarina Wiegman’s team battled back to defeat Nigeria and Colombia in the round of 16 and quarterfinals.
Many believed that England is now the clear favourite to win the championship after the elimination of teams like the United States, Germany, France, and Sweden.
At the Stadium Australia in Sydney on Wednesday morning, England faced off against the co-hosts Australia.
The co-hosts have been in excellent form, earning a spot in the World Cup semifinals for the first time ever.
Both teams had opportunities to take the lead in front of the loud crowd inside Stadium Australia, but neither defence gave in.
Sam Kerr, Australia’s star striker, had an early opportunity to put her country ahead but was stop by the offside flag and England custodian Mary Earps.
Ella Toone scored a top-drawer effort with 35 minutes left on the clock to give England the lead.
The ball fell precisely into her path, and she arrowed it into the top of the net with the outside of her boot.
Former England player Rachel Brown Finnis praised the team for their “sumptuous play” and “good build up.” That’s interesting! Through-the-ball strike. side netting and top bins.
“That should address any criticism Ella Toone has received during this tournament, and I am thrill for her.”
Toone felt as though she had something to prove after being bench for England’s match versus Haiti. Due to Lauren James’ red card against Nigeria, the manager decided to reintegrate Toone.
