The second season of “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” has concluded, and the show’s creator, Max Borenstein, confirmed the news. He expressed gratitude and love for the series, even though it didn’t end as they had originally planned. Director Salli Richardson also shared her thoughts on Instagram, emphasizing the importance of giving it your all and having no regrets in creative endeavors.
The second season of the show returned to HBO on August 6, drawing 629,000 total viewers across various platforms, which was a decline from the impressive 901,000 viewers who tuned in for the Season 1 debut in March 2022. Season 1 had also achieved 1.6 million same-day viewers for its finale, but it’s worth noting that it likely benefited from the excitement of March Madness, which naturally brings basketball to the forefront of people’s minds.
“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” is based on Jeff Pearlman’s book, “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.” The second season focused on the period following the 1980 NBA Finals through 1984, leading up to the first professional rematch between basketball legends Magic (Quincy Isaiah) and Larry Bird (Sean Patrick Small) of the Boston Celtics.
Jeff Pearlman had recently urged viewers to check out the second season, emphasizing the importance of viewership for the show’s future. Adrien Brody, John C. Reilly, Michael Chiklis, and Jason Segel are among the stars of “Winning Time,” along with a talented ensemble cast.
The executive producers of the series include writer/co-creators Max Borenstein and Jim Hecht, as well as Adam McKay, Kevin Messick, Scott Stephens, Rodney Barnes, director Salli Richardson-Whitfield, and Jason Shuman.
