In a recent announcement by SM Entertainment, K-pop idols Sungchan and Shotaro have departed from the boyband NCT. The agency conveyed this news via NCT’s social media accounts on May 24. SM Entertainment expressed their apologies and gratitude to the fans who have eagerly supported Sungchan and Shotaro. Anticipating their debut as part of a new NCT group. However, the agency revealed that the duo will be embarking on a fresh journey by re-debuting in a new boy group slated for a 2023 launch.
SM Entertainment explained that after careful deliberation and discussions with Sungchan and Shotaro in preparation for SM 3.0. They reached a decision that would align with the artists’ desires and the artistic and musical direction of each group. Meanwhile, the agency also touched upon the forthcoming Japan-based NCT sub-group, known as NCT Tokyo. They confirmed that this new group would mark the “final” addition in NCT’s infinite expansion. The aim is to create a distinct worldview that genuinely represents a regional identity. In accordance with this vision, SM Entertainment intends to increase the number of Japanese members and introduce new members, sharing their debut journey with fans.
Sungchan and Shotaro initially joined NCT in October 2020 and participated in songs from the boyband’s second and third studio albums, namely “NCT 2020 Resonance” and “Universe” respectively. However, unlike their predecessors in NCT, they did not join any of the existing sub-groups, which include NCT 127, NCT Dream, and WayV.
This month has seen the departure of two other NCT members as well. On May 10, Lucas Wong of NCT and WayV announced his departure from the groups after an extended hiatus.
Fans eagerly await the future endeavors of Sungchan and Shotaro. As well as the exciting developments within NCT’s expanding musical landscape.
